plain blocks
a call to rt.new_k / rt.recycle_leaf with a constant class, or to rt.own,
does its class-list pop or push (or owner store) inline and goes on after
the call; an empty list, memdebug, a held range, a block outside memory, a
translated word or a type/class mismatch takes the ordinary call. in a
region this replaces the o3_invoke round trip. o3 frees of leaf objects now
use recycle_leaf too (new_k stamps the type inside o3 since b86db60).
ZYNOFASTALLOC=1 turns it off; ZYPERFMAP=1 writes a perf map of translated code.
tests/programs/o3_freelist.zc: reuse, zeroing, an empty list, untyped
neighbours, memdebug; jit vs ZYNOFASTALLOC vs ZYO3INTERP.

arm64, llvm and the region-interpreter rdrop path now watch the two
prologue words the way the x86-64 jit already did, so icon.replace_function's
lit+jmp patch retires a compiled callee (and clears fn_nat) instead of leaving
a stale stub. three new icon regressions: repeated o3 replace, failed
publication keeps the old entry, and a direct call after warming the region.

Port arm64's rcall/rfinish to the x86-64 region jit: call the callee's entry
stub through fn_nat with a built frame, return via linkstk, and fall back to
o3_invoke when the stub is missing or the frame/depth check fails. Clear
fn_nat on rforget and cover the function prologue so icon.replace_function
drops the region (o3_caller_replace). vm_until saves jit_depth around nested
bytecode, matching arm64.

of p[-4]
the bnd recipe and paylen read n instead of the power-of-two block:
bnd: r6 = sub p 3; r6 = ld r6; r7 = xor p 0x2B7E1516; r6 = eq r6 r7;
r7 = sub p 4; r7 = ld r7; r7 = shr r7 32; r7 = mul r7 q;
r8 = mul i m; r8 = ltu r8 r7; r8 = xor r8 1; r0 = and r6 r8
paylen: return p[-4] >> 32
two loads instead of three; osize, bchk, release, recycle and the memdebug
leak report all read n (rt.new(4) has length 4, rt.new(0) has 0).
writers: new_raw and new_k set n; stack.h line 87 and tinyvm.ts (BigInt) set
it on stack segments. release clears n when a block goes into quarantine
(len 0, indexing traps; under memdebug bchk reports a use after free); every
free-list path (fpush, mkblock, bdrop, recycle_leaf, balloc hold) rewrites
the word as k << 16, and an array that grows gets a fresh block. a request over
2^31-1-HDR words stops in new_raw (oom), and the compiler only takes the
new_k fast path for constant sizes that fit, so n is never truncated.
bit users checked (all mask or preserve bits 32..62; none compares or copies
the whole word): gc mark and sweep; release, free, recycle, recycle_leaf;
share and own; isobj, quar, checkptr, obj_base; bclass and the bfree buddy
merge; balloc, mkblock, fpush, funlink, heap_grow; frame_grow; stack_allocate
in src/core/stack.h and src/js/tinyvm.ts; micro.c and core.c (check word
only); the compiler's two p[-4] | F_INTERNAL writes (base.zc, builtins.zc).
32-bit ports: none (baremetal, wasm and micro use int64 Cell).
tests: tests/programs/exactsize.zc (n-1/n for non-power-of-two sizes, new(0),
packed bytes, recycle, grow, stack growth); 8-runtime: exact_size_bounds,
pointer_index_n_minus_1, pointer_index_n_traps, pointer_index_n_traps_memdebug,
new_zero_index_traps, new_too_big_traps, stale_index_after_free_traps,
stale_index_after_free_memdebug. expectations changed: leak report shows n
(tests/test.sh line 169, examples/learn/13-memdebug.out, docs/LEARN.md,
4-statements/memdebug_report_line.zc). programs adjusted to keep test.sh
expectations: quarantine.zc (unbounded), bounds_heap.zc (rt.new(11)).
spec 3.7.4 and 4.11 updated. fixpoint 402204 words (main 402197).

the cores take their genome in with c23 #embed through src/core/genome.h,
so images are plain little-endian word files (genome.bin) instead of
generated c headers. zc0 writes that format, mkgenome checks an image
against its map and shows a compiler's diagnostics when it gets them,
and the javascript vm and the editor's vm host read the same files.
src/tools/findcc.sh picks a compiler with #embed (clang 19 or gcc 15).
zc gets an embed declaration, embed "file" as [type] name, for globals
and locals: a byte string by default, char*, numbers read little-endian,
and arrays of numbers. the compiler and language server carry their
library and source texts through it, so embed.sh and the text it
spliced into compiler.zc are gone.
make writes executables to build/bin, the default map to build/core/map,
the web page to build/web and the extension staging to build/vsix, and
the genome now rebuilds when its sources change. the test suite lays
out its own map and bootstrap and reads nothing from build/.
also: rt.put_s of a byte string in zc0 images, retained function
sources no longer count as live objects, a missing include no longer
cascades into undefined-name errors, consecutive comment lines join
into one hover paragraph, and stale test fixtures follow the include
format.

Compiler and VM
- make every memory map limit dynamic and adjustable at both build time and
runtime, including compiler tables, stacks, and every execution region
- reserve and grow tables, operand and return stacks, frame segments, and
image-building output without relocating live code or globals
- rename i/o and string helpers consistently (puts -> put_s, putn -> put_n,
scat -> cat_s) across compiler, runtime, examples, tests, and docs
- recast and consume values assigned to globals from inside functions
- allow fixed and const together, add typed closure returns (fn:t(...)),
multi-include syntax (include rt, run, core;), and recurse type inference
- never infer string literals as word, anywhere, as argument, variable, or
return type
- draft docs/BORROW.md: a borrow checker less intrusive than Rust's but more
intelligent
LSP and editor integration
- require explicit includes and give every toolchain area its own namespace
(rt, lsp, run, core)
- hover for built-in types, inferred types, values known at hover time, array
and pointer lifetime/size, library names in include statements, and inferred
lifetimes with explanations
- honor /* */ comments as documentation for variables and arguments, and stop
misattributing section headers or trailing comments as variable hints
- stream diagnostics and cancel stale requests on change
- jump to definition and references, including cross-file
- quick fixes with automatic library import, and namespace completion
Hints and diagnostics
- render hints as blue squigglies by default, with hints on/small/off per file
- suppress magic-number hints via a preceding /* */ comment, and say so
- warn on unused arguments; allow multiple _ discards in parameters, pattern
matching, and tagged enums, warning if a _ is actually used
- rewrite hint and comment prose in professional compiler-doc register
Libraries
- add icon.zc: run-time self-modification, find/replace syntax, type and block
edits, and step-through inspection of locals and globals
- add actor.zc: async actors with Actor<I,O>, implicit this, spawn/recv/send,
injected into the compiler machinery at include time rather than built in
Tooling and docs
- reorganize sources, tests, and designs into subdirectories
- unify windows entry points in tinyvm.bat and add a matching tinyvm.sh
- add --help across the toolchain
- polish the learning guide, stdlib docs, and design notes
Tests
- add accept, reject, and regression coverage across the compiler, LSP,
- runtime, icon, actors, threads, formatting, and the toolchain contracts,
plus fuzzers and property tests
